Article updated on 03/25/2024

General Information

As of 4/1/24 Getaround is suspending operations in the state of New York. This article should answer and address all of the questions that our Getaround community may have at this time.

Why is Getaround suspending operations in New York?

  • Effective April 1, 2024, Getaround will be voluntarily suspending its operations in the state of New York due to an existing state law that significantly increases the cost of liability insurance coverage.

  • Partly as a result of this law, drivers are faced with significantly higher insurance costs, which negatively impacts vehicle utilization and owners' ability to earn.

  • Our marketplace is built on flexibility and choice and we do not believe that we are able to offer the experience our community in New York deserves at this time.

Is Getaround suspending operations anywhere else?

No. This suspension only applies to the state of New York and is due to rising insurance costs caused by ambiguities in applicable New York state law. Operations in all other states will continue as usual. Getaround is aggressively pursuing conversations with legislators in New York to make a swift return to the market after these legislative ambiguities are resolved.

Why so suddenly?

Despite aggressively pursuing various options to continue operating in New York state, we have been unable to identify a cost-effective solution at this time. We understand that this is disappointing and will be disruptive to our community.
