Guide to distant returns

Article updated on 05/15/2024

At the end of the rental, the driver should return the car to the address on the listing, unless another location has been mutually agreed upon.

For street parking: the driver should return the car within a radius of a 1/4 mile of its listing position. You should provide additional guidance on where to park easily, or what specific zone is not authorized. If the driver parks the car more than a 1/4 mile away from its listing address without your explicit agreement, you will be entitled to the following compensation:

  • from 1/4 mile to 2 miles away: $20
  • from 2 miles to 10 miles away: $30
  • from 10 miles to 20 miles away: $75
  • 25 miles to 49.99 miles away: $150
  • 50 miles to 74.99 miles away: $150 + travel to retrieve vehicle + food up to $25
  • 75 miles to 99.99 miles away: $200 + travel to retrieve vehicle + food up to $25
  • 100 miles to 149.00 miles away: $250 + travel to retrieve vehicle + food up to $25
  • 150 miles to 250 miles away: $350 + travel to retrieve vehicle + food up to $25

Please note the driver should not have to pay for parking. However, they must return the car in an authorized location. In the event of a ticket for parking in an unauthorized space, the driver will be responsible for paying the fine.

For private parking: the driver should return the car to the specific spot you describe in your instructions. If they park in another spot without your explicit agreement, you will be entitled to the following compensation:

  • other spot within the parking lot: $20
  • within a 2 mile radius outside the parking lot: $30
  • from 2 miles to 10 miles away: $30
  • from 10 miles to 20 miles away: $75
  • more than 20 miles away: $150
  • 50 miles to 74.99 miles away: $150 + travel to retrieve vehicle + food up to $25
  • 75 miles to 99.99 miles away: $200 + travel to retrieve vehicle + food up to $25
  • 100 miles to 149.00 miles away: $250 + travel to retrieve vehicle + food up to $25
  • 150 miles to 250 miles away: $350 + travel to retrieve vehicle + food up to $25

NB: You will need to provide a receipt for any compensation if the car is delivered more than 20km away.

Management of an impounded vehicle due to improper or prohibited parking: In this situation, we recommend checking whether the impoundment is due to improper or prohibited parking during a Getaround rental, and then paying the associated fees. You can then contact us to charge the driver and you will get reimbursed (if the rental conditions have been met). To request reimbursement, go to My Rentals > [relevant rental] > Received violation during the rental.

Owners will be asked to recover Vehicles that have been abandoned by Drivers or impounded due to a Driver’s actions themselves to be compensated for repatriation.
