Guide to fuel adjustments

Article updated on 04/12/2024

Getaround rental prices don't include the cost of fuel. The renter must therefore return your vehicle with the same amount of fuel as it had at the start of the rental. You are not required to provide the vehicle with a full tank, but this does make it easier to check the gauge at the end. You're required to have at least a quarter of the tank of fuel at the beginning of the rental.

Electric vehicles: For the moment, we are unable to process adjustments for electric vehicles. In the meantime, you can alternatively choose to settle this payment privately with the driver. We understand that the need for these adjustments is very important, and we are actively working on implementing this feature. Thank you for your patience in the meantime!

Getaround Connect & Key Exchange rentals

Thanks to Getaround Connect®, you don’t have to request an adjustment for mileage or fuel at the end of the rental – it’s all read by the Getaround Connect® device, then calculated and updated automatically.

For key Exchange Rentals, the fuel reading is done by the driver during the checkin and checkout inspections. This value is then used to make an automatic fuel adjustment (see below).

How do automatic adjustments work?

The Getaround Connect® device in your car will read the fuel level at the beginning and end of the rental and calculate the adjustment automatically. If ever there's an issue, you will receive an alert and you'll be able to request a fuel adjustment manually from the rental page once the rental is ended.

Certain vehicles may possess distinct or proprietary communication protocols that differ from widely accepted industry standards. This can pose a challenge for the Getaround Connect to interpret the fuel level data. Therefore, automatic adjustments are not possible for all eligible vehicles on the platform.

How are automatic adjustments calculated?

If the driver returns the car with a different fuel level, we calculate the difference and charge or refund the driver automatically, based on the size of the car's tank and a fixed price per gallon:

Regular Gas Premium Gas
Florida $4.70 $5.08
Illinois $5.40 $5.93
California $6.67 $6.87
New York $4.73 $5.20
Massachusetts $4.66 $5.09
Georgia $4.52 $5
New Jersey $4.62 $4.93
Pennsylvania $4.88 $5.26
Washington, DC $5.17 $5.58

Wisconsin $4.63 $5.13
South Carolina $4.35 $4.77
Kansas $4.20 $4.60
Minnesota $4.38 $4.85

These are based on the high end of the fuel market to make sure that you get compensated if the driver gives the car back with less fuel than at the start. The size of your tank is detected automatically. If you think it is incorrect please contact us.

Additionally, you will be compensated $1.44 per missing gallon for the refill service.

How is the driven distance adjusted?

If the driver travels further than the included distance, they are automatically charged for the additional miles based on the price per mile that Getaround sets. And if they didn’t travel as far? Nothing changes – the unused miles are not refunded.
