Guide to foreign driving licences

Article updated on 09/07/2023

All countries

It is possible to rent on Getaround with a foreign driving license. Specific verifications can be required however, depending on the issuing country.

These verifications are checked by the owner at the beginning of the rental. For Getaround Connect rentals, Getaround takes care of the verifications.

For cars registered in France:

To rent and drive a Getaround vehicle in France, the driver must first meet our rental conditions.. Depending on the country that emitted the driving license, you may also have to check and take pictures of additional documents at check-in.

There are two distinct cases:

1) The license has been issued by a EU or a Schengen space country (EU country list + Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland): the license is usable without any additional document.

2) The license has been issued out of the European Economic Area (Morocco, Mexico, Brazil...). Here there are 3 cases:

a) The driver has been in France for less than 90 days

You will need to check and take pictures of:

  • The valid and original driving licence
  • The passport page on which there is the date of entry on the territory. For certain countries (like Canada), you can travel to France without a stamp on the passport. In this case, you will need to check and take pictures of a proof of residency to date their arrival.

b) The driver has been in France for more than 90 days but less than 1 year

You will need to check and take pictures of:

  • The valid and original driving licence
  • A visa allowing them to stay on French territory

c) The driver has been in France for more than 1 year

You will need to check and take pictures of: a French driving licence: their foreign licence is no longer valid, unless they have a student visa. In this case, their foreign licence is valid until the end of their studies. You will have to check and take a picture of their original licence and their study visa.

All countries

NB: If the foreign licence is written in a different alphabet (Chinese for instance), you will need to check and take pictures of the original licence AND an international licence or an official translation of the original licence.

NB2: If the foreign licence doesn't show the issue date, you will also need to check and take a picture of a proof of history that shows the real date of issue for the driving licence.

Every additional driver must also show the required documents and you must take pictures of their documents as well.

For cars registered in the UK

To hire and drive a Getaround vehicle in the UK with a foreign licence, the driver must first meet all our rental conditions. Depending on the country that issued the licence, you will also have to check and take photos of any additional documents at check-in, as well as the driver’s driving licence.

The licence must be issued by a country in the European Economic Area (EU list of countries + Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and must be valid without any additional documents.

If the driver has a licence from a country outside the European Economic Area, they unfortunately won't be able to rent on Getaround.
